It is commonplace to see young people, especially teens, trying to outdo one another to impress the opposite sex. The efforts they put in can range from the ordinary, like becoming particularly fussy about their looks; to the bizarre, like saying and claiming things that are untrue!

I was once with a young man who was making promises he did not have the resources to keep. When I asked him how he was going to fulfill the promises, he told me:

“Those are vibes. I was just “yorbing” her.”

“Vibes” and “Yorbs” are terms used in place of “posturing” in the society where I live. While posturing is frowned upon as deceptive; once you justify it as a “vibe” or “yorb” it is generally accommodated.

Describing it thus, sort of waters down its gravity.

We sometimes carry this watering down attitude to God. So, someone who lies a lot is very critical of another who fornicates; and justifies the lies by saying the lies are “nothing”; basically saying lying is not as sinful as fornication!

Can the same argument stand before God?

READ Psalm 130:3

“If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?”(Psalm 130:3)

The Psalm we just read is very straight forward: If God is the examiner, can the one who is lying say he is more righteous than the one who is fornicating?

The issue of righteousness is a full meal, and not a buffet; We cannot pick and choose what we want.

In the book of James, we read,

“Whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet stumble in one point, he is guilty of all.” (James 2:10)

God hates lies and other sins, as much as He hates fornication and other sins.

No sin is His favorite sin; no sin is ordinary, and others, extraordinary.

MEMORY VERSE

“If You, Lord, should mark iniquities, O Lord, who could stand?”(Psalm 130:3)

QUESTIONS

1. Are you tempted to say  your sins are not too serious?

2. Why not face it? There is no ordinary or extraordinary sin before God.

PRAYER TIP

Lord Almighty, please help us to own up to our sins and ask for forgiveness.
