I look at history and current events, and I know there is God. I read about Sargon II and Sennacherib of the Assyrian empire, Alexander the Great and the Greek empire, Tiberius Caesar Augustus and Nero of the Roman Empire, and I know there is God. I look at the history of civilization, the pyramids of Egypt, the temples and amphitheatres in Greece, and I know there is God. But the greatest of all is the history of the people of Israel, their exiles and returns, the proclamation of the state of Israel in 1948, the fact that Jerusalem is still divided into West and East Jerusalem with both Palestinians and Israeli’s claiming to be descendants of Abraham; I see  Israel desiring to rebuild the Temple in Jerusalem, and I know there is God.

I look at festivals and the sacrifices that are made, and I know there is God. The spreading of “Kpookpoi” by the Ga people of Ghana during the Homowo Festival; the Odwira festival of the people of Akropong-Akwapim in Ghana, an annual traditional purification ritual, where sheep are offered as a sacrifice for the sins of the people; the voodoo worship and festivals of the people of Benin, and Haiti; Aztecs of Mexico and their sacrifices to the Huitzilopochitli; the ukubobonga “thanksgiving” sacrifices, and the ukuthetha “scolding” sacrifices of the Zulu; the animism and shamanism practiced by the Inuit of Alaska, Canada and Greenland; the creator god and Sky Father, called Biame or Baayami, in Australian Aboriginal mythology; the Shinto purification rituals of the people of Japan; the ghost dance of the Native Americans and its origins; all point us to God.

I look at humans and I know there is God. I look at the fact that every human being, whether religious or not, has an innate sense of right and wrong, and I know there is God. In almost all cultures death always leads to sadness, and murder is abhorred. Even in the most savage cultures, they still have unspoken and unwritten norms on what is right or wrong, and I know there is God.

The physical attributes and mental capacities of man makes us know that God exists. A Ghanaian proverb says “Obi nkyere abofra Nyame”, to wit “No one teaches the child to know God” tell me there is God. God makes himself known even to children. When the child looks at himself, the sky and the clouds, the sun, the stars and the moon, he definitely sees a mighty Creator at work.

I watch National Geographic, and read Nature magazine and I know there is God. I read astronomy, and even astrology, and I know there is God. When properly studied and understood, creation is one of God’s greatest proofs of not only His existence, but His might, creativity and intelligence. All scientific, economic, cultural, physiological, psychological, agricultural, medical, political and many other areas of knowledge are derived from God’s created world. We are discovering what God has already done day by day; and we are awed by the sheer majesty. In my opinion, researchers should be the most religious among us!

The inherently religious nature of  humans makes me believe there is God. Some choose stones, others choose trees, yet others choose rivers and mountains; some worship the sun, others the moon, others the animals, like cattle, elephants etc; all in a bid to get to that higher reality and being they feel exists, but cannot see except through these objects. I see all these and I know there is God. While the exact nature of the belief and worship may vary considerably, there is generally a universal tendency toward a relationship and worship of a higher being.

I watch Corona Virus and the way the great and mighty, the famous and rich, the influential and the well connected got confounded, running helter-skelter for shelter, and I know there is God. I have watched a lot of so-called “men of God”  whose self-serving invincible posturing and antics clearly showed they were more qualified to be “men of themselves”, run for cover in the face of the Corona virus, and I realize the one and true God has spoken!

Finally, I hear stories of the final moments of people who say they don’t believe there is God, and I know there is God.

In the final analysis, even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as there are many gods and many lords),  yet for me there is one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we for Him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, through whom are all things, and through whom we live.

MEMORY VERSE

” For there is one God and one Mediator between God and men, the Man Christ Jesus.” (1 Timothy  2:5)

Almighty Father, we are awed by your creation; but we also yearn to know You more.
