The most effective way to “Guard Your Heart” is to keep it filled with wholesome, edifying and godly things! We can never get it wrong this way. Let me tell you a story.


I was told when young, that ghosts lived in dark places. Due to that, I would never enter a dark place, or sleep in a dark room alone! As I grew, I got to know ghosts, if they exist at all, are spirits and can be anywhere at anytime; meaning they are already around me. That knowledge, kept the terrible ghost stories, and the associated fear of darkness, out of my system!


When you fill your heart with wholesome things, unwholesome things are automatically kept out. When you fill your heart with light, darkness automatically disappears.


READ John 1:4-5


In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.”
(John 1:4-5 NIV)


Good knowledge always illuminates and liberates. It shines forth like light, in darkness, so that the darkness is not able to overcome it.


Apostle Paul, in his letter to the Phillipians wrote:


Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable,if anything is excellent or praiseworthy; think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8 NIV)

Paul, here, is teaching the Philippians practical ways to guard their hearts; telling them to fill their minds with things that are true, noble, right, pure, lovely, admirable, excellent and praiseworthy. This list is not exhaustive.

Generally, as a follower of Jesus Christ, you need to ask yourself: 


What things will Jesus be thinking about?


His actions reflect his thoughts: He associated with sinners (Luke 7:36-50; Luke 19:1-20); He was merciful towards the condemned (John 8:1-11); He touched those that others would not touch (Matthew 8:1-3); He was tolerant of those that society had rejected (Luke 8:43-48) and told the Father to forgive His murderers (Luke 23:33-34)!


Jesus has the purest of hearts because He filled His heart with holiness and purity!


God help us all to guard our hearts, by pursuing Christlike holiness and purity. 


It will not happen overnight; but we need to desire it, and start the process. God will surely do the rest.

MEMORY VERSE
“If anything is excellent or praiseworthy; think about such things.” (Philippians 4:8)

2. Jesus is our example. Would you want to follow His example today?

Father, please help us to guard our hearts; by helping us to pursue Christlike purity and holiness.
