The Light In Darkness

“Before we understand science, it is natural to believe that God created the universe. But now science offers a more convincing explanation — What I meant by ‘we would know the mind of God’ is, we would know everything that God would know, if there were a God, which there isn’t. I’m an atheist.”
The statement above was attributed to Stephen Hawking — the physicist who survived the incurable neurodegenerative condition ALS, for decades, to die at age 76 against doctors’ predictions – when he granted an interview to The Guardian.
Hawking made this statement to clarify an earlier statement, having invoked the name of God in his seminal book A Brief History of Time, writing that if physicists could find a “theory of everything” — that is, a cohesive explanation for how the universe works — they would glimpse “the mind of God.”
The scientist, who considered himself an atheist, told The Guardian in 2011 that death was never far from his mind, and was also quoted as saying,
“I regard the brain as a computer which will stop working when its components fail. There is no heaven or afterlife for broken down computers; that is a fairy story for people afraid of the dark.”
Interestingly, scientists are the first to admit that we are still discovering the universe; and agree we would never find a “theory of everything”!
Stephen Hawkin’s reference to “the dark” in the quote above is what Christ came to dispel.
READ John 8:12
“Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying,
‘I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.’” (John 8:12)
Jesus never minced words about who He was, and what He came to do here on earth. He is the light of the world, and he who follows Him will not walk in darkness. Even death will not be dark to those who believe Him! He also referred to Himself as the Light, in his encounter with Nicodemus, the Pharisee and Ruler of the Jews, who came to see Him secretly in the night. He told him,
”And this is the condemnation, that the light has come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. For everyone practicing evil hates the light and does not come to the light, lest his deeds should be exposed. But he who does the truth comes to the light, that his deeds may be clearly seen, that they have been done in God.” (John 3:19-21)
John the Baptist also bore witness to this Light. In John 1:6-9, it is written
“There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world.” (John 1:6-9)
I studied science; and I know it is good. But science only discovers what God already knows; still leaving a lot of darkness!
In Jesus, there is light. In Him, the future is clear and bright.
