There is an old Chinese proverb that says,

“The faintest ink is more powerful than the strongest memory.”

How true!

Personally, I have realized that the more I have to think about, the more I forget. My memory was sharper when I was younger and didn’t have much to think about. Now that I have more to think about rather, my memory fails me a lot. It is very frustrating! I have to resort to putting down all sorts of notes – on stick-it pads, whiteboards, electronic schedules, calendars etc.

As undesirable as it is, I realize forgetfulness is as old as mankind; to the extent that king David had to remind himself to ‘forget not’ God’s benefits in Psalm 103.

Read Psalm 103:1-5

Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits:

Who forgives all your iniquities,
Who heals all your diseases,

Who redeems your life from destruction,
Who crowns you with lovingkindness and tender mercies,

Who satisfies your mouth with good things,
So that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.

(Psalm 103:1-5 NKJV)

In this Psalm of praise, David was celebrating God’s abundant goodness and love, after reflecting on God’s dealings with His people from creation to exile. He opened it by saying,

“Bless the Lord, O my soul;
And all that is within me, bless His holy name!”

Then in the second verse, he said,

“…forget not all His benefits”

Then he went on to list some of the benefits; which include forgiveness of sins, healing of diseases, redemption from destruction, loving kindness, mercy, providence and sustenance.

These are things we can easily take for granted and forget; but as one preacher said,

“God shows us His mercy by giving us more time.”

Let us not take His goodness for granted and forget His benefits.

MEMORY VERSE

Bless the Lord, O my soul,
And forget not all His benefits.”
(Psalm 103:2)

QUESTIONS

1. Does life, and everything that happens, seem ordinary and usual?

2. Do you know that you can easily be deceived into trivializing everything happening, and not give the glory to God?

PRAYER TIP

Father, please help us to remember Your goodness and benefits.

URGENT CALL

By nature, we are all sinful, and alienated from God. We ultimately face the wrath of God!

But God in His mercy and love gives us a chance to reverse this trend, join His family, be part of His household, and become His children.

The first step to becoming a member of God’s household is for us to be saved.

Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior.

It is a very personal decision. No one can make for you.

If you make that decision today, there will be great singing and rejoicing in heaven; because one new member has joined the family and household of God!

Do you want to make that decision today?
