My Faith Has Found A Resting Place

The hymn, “My faith has found a resting place” (or “I need no other argument”), GBH 161, was written by Eliza Edmunds Hewitt (E.E. Hewitt).
Eliza Edmunds Hewitt, who uses the pseudonym “Lidie H. Edmunds,” was born in Philadelphia on 28 June 1851. She was educated in the public schools and became a teacher after graduation from high school. She shortly thereafter suffered a serious spinal problem when a student struck her with a heavy slate. This cut short her career, making her an invalid for the remainder of her life, even though she was able to partially recover. She studied English literature during her convalescence, and felt the need to be useful to her church. She began writing poems for the primary department. She went on to teach Sunday school. She took an active part in the Philadelphia Elementary Union and become a Sunday School Superintendent of the primary department of Calvin Presbyterian Church, and a home for orphaned children.
“My Faith Has Found a Resting Place” was published in 1891 book “Songs of Joy and Gladness, No. 2”. After the initial publication, the song was not known to be reprinted until the 1944 hymnal, “Choice Hymns of the Faith”.
Hewitt is well known for a number of other hymns, including “When We All Get to Heaven,” “Will There Be Any Stars in My Crown,” “More About Jesus,” and “Sunshine in My Soul.”
One of the scriptures on which “My faith has found a resting place” is based is Romans 5:1-5.
READ Romans 5:1-5
Paul Writing to the Romans said,
Therefore, since we are justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have obtained access to this grace in which we stand; and we boast in our HOPE of sharing the glory of God. (vv. 1-2)
It is the most important decision a human being can ever make: to reconnect to the Maker through faith in Jesus Christ. It brings a lot of peace, notwithstanding the circumstances or station in life. Paul would say,
And not only that, but we also boast in our sufferings…and HOPE does not disappoint us, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit.(vv. 3-5)
It is not that in Christ we don’t have challenges; but the HOPE we have because we have been justified by faith does not disappoint us because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit. It is the source of our peace in the midst of the turbulence.
While E.E. Hewitt was constrained by her spinal illness, the spirit of God in her was not constrained, and she went ahead to write beautiful hymns; one of which is “My faith has found a resting place”.
May our faith find a resting place in God too.
Please help me sing, “My faith has found a resting place.”
