Is Christ Enough?

I once got a complaint from a colleague Christian, and the complaint was simply this: A Christian sister had been criticizing and slandering her for visiting a prophet and his church during the week; while she is still a member of our congregation, and comes to worship there every Sunday. In other words, she has her regular church, but she also has a prophet on the side. But she said something that I still remember vividly. She said,
"She does not know the problems I have. That is why she is criticizing me."
The phenomenon I just described is very common in our setting. So people profess Christ, are born again (or so they claim, because being born again is personal); yet they have prophets, seers, diviners, mediums, cults, deities and secret societies they consult and seek answers from, on the side. A few people have told me that they keep the “side issues” because they need “quick” answers and solutions.
I have a few questions for the general readership today: Are you born again? Do you seek answers from other places, apart from Christ? Why is Christ not enough for you?
Apostle Paul seemed to have a similar problem in the Colossian church, and had to address it vigorously and profoundly.
READ Colossians 2:6-10
So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and in Christ you have been brought to fullness. He is the head over every power and authority.
(Colossians 2:6-10 NIV)
The text above is under the title, “Spiritual Fullness in Christ,” in the New International Version Bible. In this text, there is an admonishing, and a warning to the Colossian church. Paul told them to:
- Live their lives in Christ, just as they received Him as Lord, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as they were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.
- See to it that no one takes them captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy, which depends on human tradition and the elemental spiritual forces of this world rather than on Christ.
Then Paul went on to say some deep and profound truths about the Christ we are talking about. He said,
- In Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form.
- In Christ you have been brought to fullness.
- He is the head over every power and authority.
So, In Christ, we are complete, we have been brought to fullness, and are full; and we have the One who has every power and authority. Notice the use of uppercase in the spelling of “Deity.” That is a reference to God, the Master and Authority over all deities!
In some African traditional settings, like the Akan of Ghana, they believe in God the Supreme Spirit Being, the Creator and Sustainer of the universe, and they call Him “Onyame.” We are also told the deities or “gods”(what they call “abosom“) are sometimes referred to as “Nyame mba” (meaning “God’s children“). But God appointed a Son, a firstborn over all His children, over all creation!
In Colossians 1:15-16, we are told:
“The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through Him and for Him.”
So I have some questions I want everyone to ponder.
If Christ is the image of the Invisible God, the firstborn of all creation; the One in whom all things in heaven and earth, both visible and invisible whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; were created. If all things have been created through Him and for Him, why would He not be enough for you?
Is it a lack of understanding of what we have, as I was told by a very senior retired clergyman when I posed the same question to him recently?
