Legend has it that in Ancient Rome, a slave would continuously whisper

“Remember you are mortal,”

in the ears of victorious generals as they were paraded through the streets of Rome; after coming home, triumphant, from battle.

I have often asked  people who desire  certain material  blessings whether they are ready to handle them. And I have often seen people destroy themselves with the very blessings they sought and prayed for. I remember a young man who was unexpectedly thrown into wealth when a family member died suddenly. He bought a very powerful car with part of his inheritance,  and sped to death on the  Accra-Tema motorway in Ghana!

One danger of success is that we feel invincible; almost to the point of thinking we can “play God.”

Testimony Devotional writer, Lauretta Awude, took us through the rise and fall of king David in the past five days; outlining his success formula and what made him fail. In the end, she admonished us to “stay on track” when we become successful. Often, hubris and a sense of entitlement become a danger when we become successful.

In the account in 2 Samuel 11, David became so confident of himself that he thought he was entitled to everything; including Uriah’s wife; and, subsequently, his life! He had forgotten that In Deuteronomy 32:39, God said

Look now; I myself am He!  There is no other god but Me!

I am the one who kills and gives life; I am the one who wounds and heals;

no one can be rescued from my powerful hand!

(Deuteronomy 32:39 NLT)

David had a lot of problems because of this single misstep.

One thing that can help us stay on track is our constant reminder to ourselves that all that we are, and all that we have, come from God. This constant reminder stabilizes and grounds us, and makes us aware that we are not entitled to anything unless God gives it to us.

Let us always remind ourselves that, “It is all by Grace

MEMORY VERSE

“For when you have become full and prosperous and have built fine homes…Remember the LORD your God”

(Deuteronomy 8:12, 18)

URGENT CALL

Every soul is valuable to God, far more than the entire world! But by nature, we are all sinful, and alienated from God, and we ultimately face his wrath!

God in His mercy and love made a way for us to remedy this. He gives us a chance to reverse this downward spiral to destruction, join His family, be part of His household, and become His children.

The first step to becoming a member of God’s household is for us to be saved.

Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior.

It is a very personal decision. No one can make that decision for you.
