Newborn babies are equipped with several important reflexes (actions that are performed without conscious thought). These help them through their first weeks and months of life. These reflexes are involuntary movements that happen either spontaneously (as a result of a sudden impulse or inclination), or as responses to different actions. The sucking reflex, for example, happens when the roof of a baby’s mouth is touched. The baby will begin to suck when this area is stimulated, which helps with nursing or bottle feeding.

Sucking reflexes develop when a baby is still in the womb, usually between week 32 and week 36 of pregnancy. You may see this reflex in action during a routine ultrasound when you see babies suck their thumbs or hands. The life of the baby depends on this important ability.

Just like the baby’s survival depends on the innate ability to suck, the peace and fulfillment of man also depends on his inbuilt ability to connect to God — the source of life.

In Acts 17:16 following we read that, apostle Paul, transiting in Athens, was deeply troubled by all the idols he saw everywhere. He tried to reason with some of them in the synagogues and public square; and also engaged some philosophers who later invited him tell them about “this new teaching”. In the resulting address at the high council of the city, among other things, Paul said:

“His purpose was for the nations to seek after God and perhaps feel their way toward him and find him—though he is not far from any one of us.  For in him we live and move and exist. As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’  And since this is true, we shouldn’t think of God as an idol designed by craftsmen from gold or silver or stone.
(Acts 17:27-29 NLT)

Our purpose is to seek after God, and find Him. And until we find him, we will never be satisfied, and have peace.

Some look for peace in money, some in power, others in fame, and still others in religious practices. Some actually think they can find peace in stones, trees, rivers, mountains and many other places. Some think they have to perform some difficult tasks to find peace.  But what we just read shows that if we seek God, and feel our way towards Him, we will find Him; and in Him we find peace. He said,

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
(Jeremiah 29:13)

Just like a mothers breast satisfies a baby’s sucking reflex, our unquenchable thirst can only be satisfied when we seek God, and find Him.

It is the only way to peace.

MEMORY VERSE

“You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.”
(Jeremiah 29:13)
