Have you had the experience where you are just going through your stuff only to discover something valuable that you never thought was there, or which you’ve been looking for and had actually given up on? For some, like money, I usually don’t even remember the time I put them there; but the feeling is always good. The truth is that, if they had not been put them there, I would not have found them there. The same applies to our daily devotions and Bible study.

Often, what you studied yesterday is quite fresh in your memory, but when you try to remember what you studied four days, or a week ago, you realize your memory of them has become faint. The further away the day is, the more difficult it is to recollect everything you learnt.

Yet you find yourself in a situation and the same things you found so difficult to recollect by yourself begin to play back vividly. And you apply the wisdom from the knowledge you thought you had lost, to save the situation. This has happened to me so many times that I would rather have it, and forget it, than not have it at all! It could be scripture passages, hymns, songs, prayers, and sermons; I’d rather have them, and forget, than not have them at all. It is like putting a treasure in a box and closing it, compared to having an empty treasure box.

This realization makes me look at Hebrews 4:15-16 differently. I used to see it as something about prayer only, but it now has a broadened meaning to me.

This is what it says:

For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(Hebrews 4:15-16 NKJV)

Jesus our High Priest sympathizes with our weaknesses – weaknesses in remembering scripture, weaknesses in remembering sermons, weaknesses in remembering hymns and their lyrics and even weaknesses to pray, and even our own prayers. But He, who knows all things, and knows our hearts, invites us to come boldly to the “Throne of Grace” that we may obtain “Mercy” and find “Grace” to help in a time of need. Just do your part diligently.

He will keep them in the “Mercy” and “Grace” store. He knows when we need them, and He will bring them to remembrance. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

He promised to “teach us all things,” and “bring to our remembrance all things that He said to us.”

I believe Him.

MEMORY VERSE

Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
(Hebrews 4:16)
