The principal of a college told the story of a student who broke the college code and was due to be expelled. The principal said he withheld the action for three weeks, during which he said nothing to the student. In the end, he called the student, had a lengthy discussion with him, then forgave him. He said the student was very surprised, then he spoke and said,

“Principal, you have no idea what this means to me! I am going to sleep well tonight.”

The student did not have peace over the impending punishment. His joy was impeded, and he did not feel well enough to have a good sleep; until he was forgiven.

In James 5, we read;

Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord.

And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven.

Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.
(James 5:14-16)

The text above talked about sickness and healing, but mentioned sin and forgiveness. Although not always the case (eg. John 9:2-3), Bible does not ignore the link between sin and illness — physical, spiritual and emotional.

If you ever offended someone and feared how the person would react, which disorganized and disoriented you; then you know what I am talking about. How did you feel when the issue was finally laid to rest, especially through forgiveness?

In John 10:10, Jesus said,

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy;
I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.”

This scripture is very focal in counselling, in the sense that anything that deprives someone of the “fullness of life” Jesus talks about, is inimical to the health of the person. It compromises and impedes his or her “wholeness.”

Unfortunately, it is not only the “unforgiven” that suffers, but the “unforgiver” too. It is a known fact that when you encounter someone you hold something against, your pulse goes up, and your blood pressure rises. As if that is not enough, you are also deprived of time and thought, that you would have spent on productivity, thinking of how annoying the person is, and what to do to get back at the person. It is this effect that most try to manage by avoiding people they hold something against. This deprives you of the fullness of life and wholeness.

Jesus said He came so that we would have “life to the full”; so that we would experience “wholeness.”

We can only experience this when we continually forgive, and persistently love one another.

Then, the healing we experience would make us live life to the full, and bring us wholeness.

MEMORY VERSE

I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
(John 10:10)
