It was a disaster right from the start! First, he was not supposed to be home at the time; but he thought he could stay back and have some naps. Being one that has always been active — taking care of the family business and working in the military — he was not one that was used to being idle. He was easily bored with inactivity, and when he got really bored, he took a stroll.

While strolling he chanced on something he was not supposed to see. But the problem was not what he saw, but what he did after! It led to a lot of trouble for him!

Let us read this tragic story about king  David in 2 Samuel 11:1- 4

It happened in the spring of the year, at the time when kings go out to battle, that David sent Joab and his servants with him, and all Israel; and they destroyed the people of Ammon and besieged Rabbah. But David remained at Jerusalem.

Then it happened one evening that David arose from his bed and walked on the roof of the king’s house. And from the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold.  So David sent and inquired about the woman. And someone said,

Is this not Bathsheba, the daughter of  Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite?”

Then David sent messengers, and took her; and she came to him, and he lay with her, for she was cleansed from her impurity; and she returned to her house.  And the woman conceived; so she sent and told David, and said,

“I am with child.”
(2 Samuel 11:1- 4 NKJV)

In our devotional yesterday, entitled “The Compromise” we saw how Eve’s hearing was compromised and led to the compromise of all her other senses, and ultimately ended in sin and disobedience. Today, we look at another story where the eye was the first to be compromised.

Everything seemed to be going well with David until he saw a woman bathing, and he ogled her! Bible records,

“…the woman was very beautiful to behold.”(vv. 2)

David’s eyes were the first to be compromised. When he enquired about her and was told one of his junior officers was the husband, his hearing was also compromised! When he sent for her and laid with her, the rest of his senses — smell, taste and touch — followed suit!

David ultimately became a murderer (vv. 14-15) when the compromise was fully accomplished!

It was just a stroll, and an accidental sight; but all the senses lined up and co-conspired.  It ended in murder!

Solomon probably pondered his Daddy’s predicament when he wrote:

Let your eyes look straight ahead,
And your eyelids look right before you.
Ponder the path of your feet,
And let all your ways be established.
Do not turn to the right or the left;
Remove your foot from evil.

(
Proverbs 4:25-27 NKJV)

MEMORY VERSE

Let your eyes look straight ahead, and your eyelids look right before you.
 (Proverbs 4:25)
