Before a war begins both parties come with all their troops and equipment to show the strength of their army. They initially leave a safe space between them, where the two leaders can try and strike a deal. If this fails they agree in a time to start the war. They each go back to plan a strategy which they believe will work best against the enemy.

However king David did things differently. He always went to God with his plan of war to ask for confirmation or adjustments (2 Samuel 5:18-24). His immense war success can be credited to this practice.

Yesterday’s devotional, “Enter Your Stronghold,” talked about the first step David took in difficult times: To enter into his stronghold. The second step David took was to pray the prayer of enquiry to ask God what to do next. This is the account.

The Philistines arrived and spread out across the valley of Rephaim.
So David asked the Lord ,
“Should I go out to fight the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me?”
The Lord replied to David,
“Yes, go ahead. I will certainly hand them over to you.”

So David went to Baal-perazim and defeated the Philistines there.
“The Lord did it!” David exclaimed. “He burst through my enemies like a raging flood!”

So he named that place Baal-perazim (which means “the Lord who bursts through”).  The Philistines had abandoned their idols there, so David and his men confiscated them.

But after a while the Philistines returned and again spread out across the valley of Rephaim.

And again David asked the Lord what to do.
“Do not attack them straight on,” the Lord replied. “Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplar trees. When you hear a sound like marching feet in the tops of the poplar trees, be on the alert! That will be the signal that the Lord is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army.”

(2 Samuel 5:18-24 NLT)

David committed every plan to the Lord. In Proverbs 16:3, we are told:

Commit your actions to the Lord , and your plans will succeed. Proverbs 16: 3 (NLT)

How many times have we gone ahead with our plan because it appears to make sense, only for it to fail right before our eyes? But like David we can pray moment-by-moment prayers throughout the day before we do anything; apart from the prayers in we pray in our personal prayer closet time. When we do this we are fulfilling the Bible command in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, to pray always. We are also guaranteed to receive more power to live according to the will of God.

It may sometimes seem like nothing is happening initially, but when we look back, we will see that things are working more smoothly for us than they used to.

MEMORY VERSE

Pray without ceasing.
(1 Thessalonians 5:17 )

URGENT CALL

Every soul is valuable to God, far more than the entire world! But by nature, we are all sinful, and alienated from God, and we ultimately face his wrath!

God in His mercy and love made a way for us to remedy this. He gives us a chance to reverse this downward spiral to destruction, join His family, be part of His household, and become His children.

The first step to becoming a member of God’s household is for us to be saved.

Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior.

It is a very personal decision. No one can make that decision for you.

If you make that decision today, there will be great singing and rejoicing in heaven; because one new member has joined the family and household of God! A soul, much, much more valuable than the world, has been saved from destruction!

  1. I was so blessed by today’s devotional, learning that I commit to God every decision concerning my life, marriage ,career, family, etc to God. If I had done that in the past I would have saved myself from a lot of challenges I go through now. Thanks be to God for his restorative power…
