Doubting God
Views: 141
I cried like a baby yesterday. It was heartbreaking at the funeral of the young girl we lost recently. The question I repeatedly asked was,
“What would a child, who is yet to be five years old, have done to deserve such a painful death?”
I met the father on arrival and we spoke; but it took me more than thirty minutes to talk to the mother, although I saw her too. I just didn’t know what I could say to comfort a mother in such a situation.
In situations like this, we are bound to ask a lot of questions.
“God, why did this happen? Why her? Have we not served you faithfully?”
But in the midst of all these, we have to be careful not to doubt God. Creating doubts in our mind about God’s love, promises, and intentions for us is the main tool the enemy uses to pull us out of the will of God.
We take two very big, and decisive incidents in the Bible, to see how the enemy creates doubts in our minds. One led to global disaster, but the other led to global victory.
READ Genesis 3:1-5 7, Matthew 4:1-10
“Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?”
And the woman said to the serpent, “We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die.’ ”
Then the serpent said to the woman, “You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”(Genesis 3:1-5)
“Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Now when the tempter came to Him, he said, “If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”
Then the devil took Him up into the holy city, set Him on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down. For it is written:
‘He shall give His angels charge over you,’
and,
‘In their hands they shall bear you up,
Lest you dash your foot against a stone.’ ”
Jesus said to him, “It is written again, ‘You shall not tempt the Lord your God.’ ”
Again, the devil took Him up on an exceedingly high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to Him, “All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.”
Then Jesus said to him, “Away with you, Satan! For it is written, ‘You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.’ ” (Matthew 4:1-10)
In the text in Genesis, The enemy started with an apparently harmless question:
“Has God indeed said, ‘You shall not eat of every tree of the garden’?” (vs. 1)
But then he struck immediately afterwards, saying:
“You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.” (vs 4-5)
This is a very subtle way of saying,
“God does not have your interest at heart. He lied to you. Take my word over God’s word.”
In the text in Matthew, the enemy initially tried to create doubt in Jesus’ mind about His sonship too, by saying:
“If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.”(vs. 3)
“If You are the Son of God, throw Yourself down.” (and quoting Psalm 91:11-12. The enemy quotes Bible too!) (vs. 6)
Then the enemy decided to lure Jesus with God’s creation (just like he did with the apple in Genesis 3:4-5)
“All these things I will give You if You will fall down and worship me.” (vs. 9)
These are tricks the enemy still uses today!
When calamity befalls someone among my people, they go seeking answers from mediums. In the local language, they call it “afakaka” or “nutabibia”. They do this by consulting mediums, ancestral spirits, family god’s, and other deities.
When a child of God decides to do this, then we are telling God,
“God, you are not capable of providing answers, so we are going elsewhere for answers!”
It is just like Adam and Eve doubted God’s ability to make them wise, and thought a fruit He (God) created could be their answer to the wisdom question. It is disastrous.
Every time we seek answers from the creations instead of the Creator, not only do we end up more confused; but we also make God out to be a liar, and fall out of His will!
May we ask questions of God, but not sin.
MEMORY VERSE
“You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve.” (Matthew 4:10)
QUESTIONS
