We Still Have A Choice

We are currently in a very tense political season in Ghana, with everyone trying to woo the electorate. The outcome of the US elections seems to have poured more steam into the Ghanaian counterpart, and has energized it in significant proportions, making it more tense and tight; with some hoping that what happened in the US will happen in Ghana too; while others are determined to break the alleged parities between the politics of the two nations.
As a child of God, I believe the will of God will be done in the Ghanaian elections, and whatever the outcomes is, we will all accept in peace, unity and oneness; and forge ahead.
However, as I observe the race and what people are willing to do, and the extent to which they are willing to go to secure a position in the leadership of a world political system, I see the scripture in Jeremiah 17:9 in a different light. It says,
“The heart is deceitful above all things, And desperately wicked; Who can know it?”
Simply put, I am mortified at what people are willing to do, and are doing, just to get political power. To think that almost all the people scrambling for power at this time will not be in existence in the next 30 years makes it even more telling, interesting and humbling!
Is God justified in bringing everything to an end, at one time or another? Let us look at how we got here.
READ Genesis 6: 1-7
When human beings began to increase in number on the earth and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of humans were beautiful, and they married any of them they chose. Then the Lord said,
“My Spirit will not contend with humans forever, for they are mortal; their days will be a hundred and twenty years.”
The Nephilim were on the earth in those days—and also afterward—when the sons of God went to the daughters of humans and had children by them. They were the heroes of old, men of renown.
The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. The Lord regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled. So the Lord said, “I will wipe from the face of the earth the human race I have created—and with them the animals, the birds and the creatures that move along the ground—for I regret that I have made them.”
(Genesis 6: 1-7 NIV)
So God created man in His own image (Genesis 1:27), and everything was perfect. Then man sinned, and was cursed when God told the man,
“By the sweat of your brow
you will eat your food
until you return to the ground,
since from it you were taken;
for dust you are
and to dust you will return.”
(Genesis 3:19)
This was the first mention of death; and the first murder was committed not long after that (Genesis 4:8)! All the same, Adam still lived for 930 years (Genesis 5:4). Although not God’s perfect will, Genesis 5 still has some of the most amazing longevities ever!
But come to Genesis 6:3, and God dramatically reduced the length of days of men to 120 years!
Years later, the Psalmist, observing what was happening in the world, would say,
“Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away.”
(Psalm 90:10)
The Psalmist noticed, painfully, that most of us don’t get even the 120 years God limited us to!
Why? Just as in Genesis 6:3, God continues to reduce our longevity as we become more and more evil. That way, there will be breaks in the evil, and they would not get out of hand!
The only way I see out is when we eschew evil, and begin to do good. That is why God is doing His selection for those who will inherit eternal life! And God is very careful about this selection.
While looking forward to that, we can still make this place heaven; by eschewing evil and being good.
God might just have mercy and restore the longevity of Methuselah and his contemporaries, or His original image and likeness, to us; if we sincerely put evil aside, and begin to be good.
We still have a choice.
MEMORY VERSE
“If you are willing and obedient, you will eat the good things of the land.”
(Isaiah 1:19)

URGENT CALL
By nature, we are all sinful, and alienated from God. We ultimately face the wrath of God!
But God in His mercy and love gives us a chance to reverse this trend, join His family, be part of His household, and become His children.
The first step to becoming a member of God’s household is for us to be saved.
Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior.
It is a very personal decision. No one can make that decision for you.
If you make that decision today, there will be great singing and rejoicing in heaven; because one new member has joined the family and household of God!
Do you want to make that decision today?
