Green Leaves Fall, Dry Ones Do Too

We just lost a bubbly little girl, whose family visited us not too long ago! My wife has been down with malaria in the past few days, so I was surprised at the energy with which she barged into my office this morning. I was writing, and simply froze; then started fidgeting till I found my phone, pulled up her picture from the gallery, and asked,
“You mean this girl is dead?”
Pretty little girl, not even five years old! And this is not about what the parents did or did not do. I know the family closely and they are several times more knowledgeable about the human body and how it functions than most of us, and use that knowledge to help others stay alive! I was so dazed, my wife kept asking me,
“Are you Okay?
I called them, but didn’t even know what to tell them! Simply put, they realized she was shivering around 10 pm Friday night, tried stabilizing her, then rushed her to the nearest hospital; and she was gone in about two hours!
I later told a friend we are walking chemicals; and that the slightest thing, and we are gone! Even if it is just a drop in chemical molecules that make up the neurotransmitters which control our breathing and heartbeat, we will be gone within a few minutes!
The Psalmist knew these things very well and wrote, “We are dust, and our days are like grass.”
READ Psalm 103:13-18
“As a father pities his children, so the Lord pities those who fear Him. For He knows our frame; He remembers that we are dust. As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes. For the wind passes over it, and it is gone. And its place remembers it no more. But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him; and His righteousness to childrenβs children, to such as keep His covenant; and to those who remember His commandments to do them.“ (Psalm 103:13-18 NKJV)
As for man, his days are like grass; As a flower of the field, so he flourishes; but the wind passes over it and it is gone! And its place remembers it no more! That is how feeble, fragile, helpless and sorrowful we are! Yes we are very sorrowful beings! James wrote,
“What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes.” (James 4:14)
The only thing that gives us hope is the mercy of God. That is why the Psalmist went on to say,
“But the mercy of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting on those who fear Him; and His righteousness to childrenβs children, to such as keep His covenant; and to those who remember His commandments to do them.” (vs. 17-18)
Without the mercy of God, however famous, powerful, wealthy or influential we are; we are ultimately inconsequential, and disappear like grass! Green leaves fall; dry ones do too.
Don’t be too proud. Seek God’s mercy today. He gives His mercy to those who fear Him.

QUESTIONS
1. Do you feel powerful, famous, wealthy, influential and invincible?
2. Do you know we are all dust, and can disappear like vapour?
PRAYER TIP
God Almighty, please open our eyes for us to see how naked, feeble and pitiful we are; so that we will humble ourselves and come to You for mercy.
