“I am going to Dorm!”  Shaibu said after I picked the call; and my heart skipped!

Lately, my heart skips every time I hear these words from Shaibu. “Dorm” refers to Odumase-Krobo, where we both grew up. Traditionally, the Krobos, in Ghana, farm on the Akwapim-Togo ranges and the fertile lands around the Volta Lake. They generally refer to these as “Yonor” (an amalgamated form of “Yo nor”, literally meaning “mountain top” or “on the mountains”). But they have their traditional and ancestral homes in the valleys south of these hills, and refer to these as “Dorm” (a short form of “Dor mi” literally meaning “valley in” or “in the valley”).

The reason my heart skips is that Shaibu lost his immediate family in Dorm years back and hardly goes there; so anytime he tells me he is going there these days, I know someone has died; and he is going for a funeral!  I have gotten used to not asking what is happening there; I just wait for the name of the person! And I was right. He said Pooku’s brother had died. Pooku is one of our childhood friends.

I look in the mirror and I know I’m gradually inching towards my exit from here too. I got the same reminder when I had to climb a flight of stairs to a fourth floor chapel two days ago. I get the same reminder when I drive for a few hours and realize I can’t stand straight immediately after getting out of the car!

I tell myself, it might just be that one day, Shaibu would say he is going to Dorm; and I would be the subject and not the audience! It is inevitable, and it doesn’t bother me at all.

Do you feel the same too? Are you prepared? Are you ready to meet your creator anytime? We are all passing away gradually. My turn will come; yours will come too.

READ 1 John 2:15-17

“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world — the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life — is not of the Father, but is of the world.

And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever” (1 John 2:15-17)

I believe everything in the scripture text above, and it has changed the way I do things and live my life. I used to be a very anxious person, worrying about everything, everything you can think of: running out of funds, relationships, people’s expectations and perceptions, quality of life etc. But I realized I have no control, so I have handed over everything to the One who has absolute control. I feel so liberated!

The tragedy is that, while happenings all around me remind me to seek my creator, some are not so fortunate! They just get snatched up, like the young, barely five years old, girl I wrote about in “Green Leaves Fall; Dry Ones Do Too”. Within two hours, what started like fever took her away forever!

There are a lot of things we take for granted. For example, we look forward to the sun rising tomorrow, that we will go to work tomorrow, that we will meet this person and that person tomorrow; that we will do this or that! But none of those is guaranteed!

Jesus tells us heaven and earth will pass away, then added:

“About that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)
