A former schoolmate recently asked me if I have seen God before. I have heard this question quite often from people who question my beliefs; and my answer has always been,

” I don’t need a theophany — i.e. God appearing to me physically — for me to see God. I see God in His works! I look at nature — the birds, the fishes, the mountains, the rivers, the solar system, the galaxies, the universe–and I see His Mighty hand at work. I look at the complexity of the human body, and the fact that this complex yet very coordinated system is composed of elements on the periodic table, and I see a Mighty hand at work! I know He exists by seeing His works!”

I have heard the story, often attributed to Annie Dillard, of an Eskimo hunter who asked the local missionary priest,

‘If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?’

‘No,’ said the priest, ‘not if you did not know.’

‘Then why,’ asked the Eskimo earnestly, ‘did you tell me?”

A lot of people use this to justify why people should be left in their ignorance of God. Bible, however makes it clear that God has revealed Himself to everyone already.

READ Romans 1:18-25

The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people, who suppress the truth by their wickedness,  since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.

For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.  Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles.

Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another.  They exchanged the truth about God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator—who is forever praised. Amen. (Romans 1:18-25 NIV)

Quoting from the text above, the verse 20 says,

“For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”(v20)

So God, through His creation, has already revealed Himself, His eternal power, glory and sovereignty to everyone, leaving no one with an excuse about His existence.

It is without doubt that many people have known God through His creation, and many have a name for Him, long before Christianity arrived in their communities.

There is a story of Thomas Birch Freeman, the seventeenth century British Methodist missionary to West Africa, who tried introducing the people of Fomena, a town in the middle of Ghana, to God.

Birch Freeman is reported to have pulled some twigs, showed them to the people and said,

” I want to talk to you about the one who created these!”

But the people responded saying,

“We already know He exists. What we want to know is what He likes, and what He doesn’t like; so we can please Him and avoid His wrath!”

Everything around us –nature, people and history–all testify about God. We have no excuse.

This God, Who has revealed so much of Himself already, invites us into an intimate and personal relationship with Himself.

MEMORY VERSE

For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse. (Romans 1:20)

  1. The existence of God is unquestionable. His presence has been with man from creation. Everything around the livelihood of mankind portrays the existence of this great and mighty God. No matter how hard man tries to deny this fact, the day to day wonders which sometimes are unpredictable and unfathomable to man, continues to prove the existence of this invisible powerful God who orders and allows all things.
