Eulogies to Chadwick Boseman, the “Black Panther” and “21 Bridges” star, who died on August 28 — just 4 days back — also caught my attention during my recent “Whatsapp status adventure”; which I wrote about in yesterday’s devotional entitled “Do You Know Their Story”.

There were videos, posters, clips and numerous interviews. However, one particular interview caught my attention. During that interview, he was told,

“I don’t know if you know but you also broke the internet this morning with another film; ‘Avengers Endgame’…people are like ready to see the movie. They are buying the tickets; it’s nice. How does it feel to know that they love this film so much?

Chadwick answered,

“It’s great, but I’m dead! So I can’t answer any questions about that.”

The look on his face showed he expected the interviewer to ask him what he meant by that, but she kept going on and on; it looked like she was following some rigid, well-rehearsed script, that could not be altered. The fact that she asked him about “Black Panther 2” (likely referring to a future movie, and sequel to Black Panther) showed she had no clue what was happening to the man.

Chadwick had to repeat, “I’m dead.” two more times before she even paid attention to what he was saying; and even that, all she said was,

“We’re not ready for you to be dead, Chadwick?”

and Chadwick answered,

“But I am.”

Chadwick Boseman died at a painfully young age, but played excellent roles in a remarkable number of movies over the 4-year period he was undergoing treatment for cancer! My heart goes out to his family. God knows why it had to happen that way, but it is very remarkable to note how he recognized man’s powerlessness in the face of death. He was breaking the internet, breaking box office records, enjoying stardom and attention, and knew “Black Panther 2” could be a great success. But at the point in time, they did not matter to him.

Watching that interview of Chadwick Boseman reminded me of Ecclesiastes 12.

READ Ecclesiastes 12:1-5

“Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come,
And the years draw near when you say,
“I have no pleasure in them”:

 While the sun and the light,
The moon and the stars,
Are not darkened,
And the clouds do not return after the rain;

 In the day when the keepers of the house tremble,
And the strong men bow down;
When the grinders cease because they are few,
And those that look through the windows grow dim;

 When the doors are shut in the streets,
And the sound of grinding is low;
When one rises up at the sound of a bird,
And all the daughters of music are brought low.

 Also they are afraid of height,
And of terrors in the way;
When the almond tree blossoms,
The grasshopper is a burden,
And desire fails.
For man goes to his eternal home,
And the mourners go about the streets.”

(Ecclesiastes 12:1-5 NKJV)

I leant a few things from Chadwick Baseman’s life:

1. That, life starts at a point, and ends at a point. It is just how it is, and we can’t fret about it.

2. That, we all have that space between the start and the end, and it is our choice to do what we want to do with it. We can choose to complain, pity ourselves, get angry or withdraw; or we can go out there, and do great things with the potential God put in us.

3. That, we don’t need to let setbacks prevent us from doing what we have to do.

4.  That, when we are fortunate enough to know the inevitable end is close, we accept it and prepare for it. Many are those who are not that fortunate, and simply get snatched away unprepared.

May the soul of Chadwick Boseman rest in peace.

May his works, and the lessons we have learnt from his life, live on.

MEMORY VERSE

Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth,
Before the difficult days come.”

QUESTIONS

1. Time starts at birth, and ends at death. What are you doing in-between?

2. Do you know that what you do in-between determines what happens after here?

PRAYER TIP

Father, please help us to know how limited life on this earth is, so that we will pay attention to the things that matter .

  1. Amen. We bless the Lord for his life. May all our sons see heroes in the older men and may other men rise up to take the legacy to be heroes in every area of life so the sons can follow.
    When we all know our worth then no one can dictate how far we can go and neither will we have to fight to be recognised. We will turn our world upside down.
