The banking and microfinance crisis in Ghana made me more convinced than ever, that I have to always trust and commit my ways to God.

People were living their lives normally; the star CEOs and Directors that we all admired, their workers who seemed never to lack, the fleets of branded cars, and the fluid cash that seemed to float all around!

Someone who observed the inside working of one microfinance company told me,

“It is like ‘sika duro’ (ritual money: in Twi Language of Ghana).”

Another also told me

“I always look forward to the weddings of the bank boys! They are always expensive and beautiful.”

Everything seemed to be going on well, until a government decision! Suddenly, the stars became villains; masses lost the jobs; fleets were confiscated (some taken away by bewildered workers); and there was no more fluid cash!

Livelihoods were totally wiped out, homes and relationships destroyed, people thrown straight into poverty, and givers became beggars!

If anyone had predicted this, most people would have said the person was going insane!

Personally, I was not spared. But on hindsight, I see God guiding me: I moved two business accounts from one of the banks, eight months before it collapsed; and diversified more than half my investments in one MFI just months before it went down. Did I know anything? No. I just felt there was something desperate about the bank and moved; and just had good opportunities to diversify and I did. I didn’t foresee anything else!

I believe it was God guiding me, to limit how hard I would be hit!

We can deny it as much as we want; but God is ultimately the one we need to put our faith and trust in!

READ Proverbs 16:1-4

“Mortals make elaborate plans,
    but God has the last word.

 Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good;
    God probes for what is good.

Put God in charge of your work,
    then what you’ve planned will take place.

God made everything with a place and purpose;
    even the wicked are included—but for
judgment.”

 (Proverbs 16:1-4 The Message. Bible)

Need I say more?

  • Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word.
  • Humans are satisfied with whatever looks good; but God probes for what is good.
  • Put God in charge of your work then what you’ve planned will take place.
  • God made everything with a place and purpose, even the wicked are included—but for judgment!

God is ultimately the one who knows what is going on here! He knows before it happens — even the wicked, before their judgment!

He knows everything; and what happens, happens because He allows it.

MEMORY VERSE

“Mortals make elaborate plans, but God has the last word.” (Proverbs 16:1)
