While studying at the dining area this dawn, I took an interest in some ants on the table. I realized they moved in random zigzag patterns. I also noticed that when one accidentally runs into the other, they pause briefly, as if sharing some information.

A small research showed ants communicate using chirping sounds called “stridulations”.

This is a sound made by rubbing two parts of their abdomen together.

They use this to communicate to others where the best leaves are on the plant and if they are in trouble.

Ants also communicate using signals with their legs and use their antennae to sense different chemicals that other ants lay on the ground called “pheromones”. They leave these chemical trails called pheromones while prospecting for food. Once they find food, they leave another trail, which others follow to the food.

Apart from communicating using sound, touch, and pheromones, ants also talk to each other by exchanging liquid in a mouth-to-mouth fashion, in a process called “trophallaxis”. While some will consider this as kissing, this is more like ants throwing up in each other’s mouths!

Apart from nutrients, trophallaxis is used to transfer pheromones, organisms, and information — as a form of communication. Interestingly trophallaxis is used by some birds, gray wolves and vampire bats as well; but it is most highly developed in social insects such as ants.

Bible describes the ant as “little but exceedingly wise”.

READ Proverbs 30:24-25

There are four things which are little on the earth,
But they are exceedingly wise:
The ants are a people not strong,
Yet they prepare their food in the summer.

(Proverbs 30:24-25 NKJV)

The writer of Proverbs 30 mentioned four organisms in this section: ants, rock badgers, locusts and spiders (vv. 24-28); and said they are exceedingly wise. Ecclesiastes 7:12 says in the New Living Translation,

“Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.”

Wisdom is for our survival. If God cares enough for the ant to put so much detail into making it wise, why would He not care deeply for the ones He created in His own image and likeness?

If we are in doubt, we only need to ask (James 1:5); but it is surely available.

MEMORY VERSE

“Wisdom and money can get you almost anything, but only wisdom can save your life.”  (Ecclesiastes 7:12)

URGENT CALL

By nature, we are all sinful, and alienated from God. We ultimately face the wrath of God!

But God in His mercy and love gives us a chance to reverse this trend, join His family, be part of His household, and become His children.

The first step to becoming a member of God’s household is for us to be saved.

Salvation comes through accepting Jesus Christ as our Lord and Personal Savior.

It is a very personal decision. No one can make that decision for you.

If you make that decision today, there will be great singing and rejoicing in heaven; because one new member has joined the family and household of God!

Do you want to make that decision today?
