A “pulley” is a simple machine. It comprises a wheel on a fixed axle, with a groove on its external surface to guide a rope or cable. Pulleys are used to reduce the time and energy taken to lift heavy objects.

Evidence of pulleys dates back to ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia about 2000 years before Christ was born. Hero of Alexandria, believed to have lived around the time Jesus lived, identified the pulley as one of six simple machines used to lift weights. Archimedes, the Greek mathematician and inventor, later developed different systems of compound pulleys, improving on the existing technology that was around at his time.

Pulleys are one of the most amazing scientific discoveries ever when it comes to multiplying effort. They enable men to be able to lift objects which are several times their own weight!

Pulleys remind me of what Jesus told His disciples about faith and a mustard seed, in Matthew 17. This is the account:

At the foot of the mountain, a large crowd was waiting for them. A man came and knelt before Jesus and said,
“Lord, have mercy on my son. He has seizures and suffers terribly. He often falls into the fire or into the water.  So I brought him to your disciples, but they couldn’t heal him.”

Jesus said,
“You faithless and corrupt people! How long must I be with you? How long must I put up with you? Bring the boy here to me.”

Then Jesus rebuked the demon in the boy, and it left him. From that moment the boy was well.

Afterward the disciples asked Jesus privately,
“Why couldn’t we cast out that demon?”

“You don’t have enough faith,” Jesus told them. “I tell you the truth, if you had faith even as small as a mustard seed, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”
(Matthew 17:14-21 NLT)

Have you ever prayed and prayed; maybe even prayed overnight, or for days, and nothing happened? The disciples of Jesus had a similar experience when a boy who was having convulsions was brought to them, and they tried casting out the demon in him. Jesus attributed their failure to their lack of faith. I can imagine their embarrassment; just like mine when my prayers don’t seem to work. Jesus told them,

“I tell you the truth, if you had FAITH even as small as a MUSTARD SEED, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”

Faith as mustard seed?  To move mountains? I need that kind of faith!

Do you need it too? Join me to seek it in the word of God (Romans 10:17); and through our practice of prayer(Hebrews 11:6).

MEMORY VERSE

“I tell you the truth, if you had FAITH even as small as a MUSTARD SEED, you could say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it would move. Nothing would be impossible.”
( Matthew 17:20-21 )

QUESTIONS

  •      Jesus’ disciples had the same problem; and He pointed them to Faith. So don’t give up.

PRAYER TIP

Father, please forgive my
lack of faith. Please help me
to see the Master, instead
of the storm.

URGENT CALL
