The enemy never gives up on the first try but will keep coming again and again, to test you and see if you are still strong.

In the past three devotionals we looked at the three steps king David, the great warrior, had which worked for him at all times and gave his success. The first was he “Entered into his stronghold,” the second was he “Prayed the prayer of enquiry,” and the third was he “Took action.

Now we must remember to repeat these steps every time we face an enemy and battle situation; whether we think we know what to do or not.

When we look at our lives, we will notice that certain things keep repeating themselves. There are many of them: For some people it is constant job loss, for others it is business losses, and for some it is academic failure. Mostly, just when you think everything seems to have gotten better and you have put the past difficulties behind you, then you find yourself faced with the same issue again. Sometimes the first reaction is to try harder with what we already know but it tends to still end up with the same old results of failure.

David did not assume the past strategy that gave success would work every time. So he consulted God for each situation; however familiar it looked.

This is the account:

But after a while the Philistines returned and again spread out across the valley of Rephaim. And again David asked the Lord what to do.
“Do not attack them straight on,” the Lord replied. “Instead, circle around behind and attack them near the poplar trees. When you hear a sound like marching feet in the tops of the poplar trees, be on the alert! That will be the signal that the Lord is moving ahead of you to strike down the Philistine army.”

(2 Samuel 5:22-24 NLT)

An important lesson we learn from David is that he did not assume the battles were the same so he could go ahead and fight like he did in the past. He repeated the three steps again, by:

Entering into his stronghold

Praying the prayer of enquiry, and

Taking action.

We could be assuming we know, if we skip these steps; and go in our own wisdom. This could result in our inability to overcome the comeback problem.

As we keep repeating these steps daily, we will get to a point where it becomes second nature to us, and we become unshakable in the midst of any crisis. And as God blesses us through these steps, let us also use them to lead and guide others.

Whatever good thing we do consistently will yield results of great good.

MEMORY VERSE

Watch yourself and watch your teaching. Keep on doing these things, because if you do, you will save both yourself and those who hear you.

(1 Timothy 4:16 )
