There is a saying attributed to Marilyn Minter that says:

“Success is as dangerous as total failure.”

In the midst of success, all your bad habits get funding, and become affordable.  They come in to destroy you if you let them.

David was a mighty king and warrior whose success came from His relationship with God. We read in 2 Samuel 5:10 (NLT)

And David became more and more powerful, because the Lord God of Heaven’s Armies was with him.

2 Samuel 5:10 NLT

He had a powerful four step formula used in times of adversity.

  1. He went into his stronghold (took a step back)
  2. He enquired of the Lord (asked and listened)
  3. He took action (followed the plan)
  4. He repeated the steps

However he failed to use the same steps in times of success. This led to a very bad situation which created difficulties in his life,  and in generations after him.  We read that account in 2 Samuel 11:1-3 (NLT)

In the spring of the year, when kings normally go out to war, David sent Joab and the Israelite army to fight the Ammonites. They destroyed the Ammonite army and laid siege to the city of Rabbah. However, David stayed behind in Jerusalem. Late one afternoon, after his midday rest, David got out of bed and was walking on the roof of the palace. As he looked out over the city, he noticed a woman of unusual beauty taking a bath. He sent someone to find out who she was, and he was told,

“She is Bathsheba, the daughter of Eliam and the wife of Uriah the Hittite.”

Then David sent messengers to get her.
(2 Samuel 11:1-4 NLT)

David chose to relax because all his battles were going well. He found himself in the wrong place, at the wrong time. He took someone’s wife, and got the husband killed. God was very displeased with him, and told him:

“Now, therefore, the sword will never depart from your house, because you despised me and took the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your own.”
(2 Samuel 12:10 NIV)

As a consequence, his son’s killed each other and even tried to kill him. All because he failed to repeat his personal success formula, when things seemed to be working for him.

Moses told the Israelites in Deuteronomy 8:10-11

“When you have eaten your fill, be sure to praise the LORD your God for the good land He has given you.

But that is the time to be careful! Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.”

Although the pandemic has brought a lot of disruption into our lives including our finances. Very soon those who are listening to God will get their breakthroughs. Do not forget your commitment and relationship with God when that happens. Keep practicing what worked in times of adversity and you will live a successful life, and leave a good heritage for your future generations.

A good man leaves an inheritance to his children’s children, but the sinner’s wealth is passed to the righteous.

(Proverbs 13:22 BSB)

Do not forget God, especially in the good times.

MEMORY VERSE

“Beware that in your plenty you do not forget the Lord your God and disobey his commands, regulations, and decrees that I am giving you today.”

(Deuteronomy 8:11 )
