Jesus Take The Wheel

There are times that you know you’ve done all your human strength can do; but still don’t see the way forward. Instead of giving up in resignation, give the control to God, through prayer.
Such prayers don’t need to be elaborate. They can be as simple as,
“God, the rest is in your hands.”
“God please take over.”
or
“God, I am in your hands.”
I remember an experience like that vividly, with one of my sons. He was running temperature and we took him to the hospital; and was diagnosed and treated with anti-malarial medications and antibiotics; but the fever returned when we got home that night. Having exhausted the options of using paracetamol and ibuprofen to control the fever, we resorted to wrapping him in towels dipped in tepid water — something a very experienced midwife taught us — while monitoring the temperature. My prayer was very short, as usual.
Tired from the hospital trip and all the activity, I don’t even remember how we fell asleep! But I remember waking up with a jolt, and rushing to go check on the boy! To my relief, not only did I find him soundly asleep, but the fever had totally subsided! God took over when our strengths couldn’t go further. He took care of it.
Sometimes, we just need to recognize and admit that it is beyond us, and surrender to God.
READ Psalm 127:1-3
“Unless the Lord builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless the Lord guards the city,
The watchman stays awake in vain.
It is vain for you to rise up early,
To sit up late,
To eat the bread of sorrows;
For so He gives His beloved sleep.
Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord,
The fruit of the womb is a reward.
(Psalm 127:1-3)
I was listening to a sermon this morning in which a story was told of a karate master, who quickly routed his former student who had become a karate star, in a contest between the two.
When asked how he so quickly disbanded the younger star, he said,
“I have 360 different karate skills. I taught him only 359!”
When dealing with issues of life, we are apt to think we know everything; but just like the karate star, the stark truth is that we don’t!
Many men think they are the ones that get their wives pregnant; but the scripture text we just read tells us that, even the fruit of the womb is a reward (vv.3); it is a gift from God!
When we realize how little control we have; it makes it easier for us to fall on our knees; and, with Carrie Anderson, sing and say:
“Jesus, take the wheels. I can’t do this on my own!”
Jesus set an example for us in Luke 23:46 when He cried loudly and committed His spirit to God, saying;
“Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.”
I have gotten to that point several times in life, especially since I became a parent.
Today, I am telling Jesus to take the wheels again!
And He will do it again!
MEMORY VERSE
“Jesus called out with a loud voice, ‘Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.’” (Luke 23:46)
QUESTIONS
1. Have gotten to your wits end, and about to give up?
2. Why not hand over to God in prayer; and let Him continue where your strength left it?
PRAYER TIP
Father, into Your hands I commit myself, my family, my friends, my colleagues and all parents.
