After Liverpool overturned a 3-0 lead by AC Milan in the 2005 UEFA Champions League to become the European Cup Champions, legend has it that the motivating effect of the fans singing, “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” gave the players hope when all seemed lost.

As reported on the Classic FM website,

“This small act of defiance in the face of adversity galvanised the Liverpool team, and they managed to pull back and win the match on penalties, crowning them European Cup Champions.”

Later, when asked which club had the best fans, Carlo Ancelotti, then coach of Milan, said,

“In my opinion Liverpool fans. When they sing a song they… I don’t know in English, but your skin is…”(flutters his fingers up and down his arm to explain).

The song, “You’ll never walk alone,” premiered as part of the Rodgers and Hammerstein show, Carousel, in 1945. It was an instant hit probably because it’s message of triumph in adversity spoke to the wartime crowds of April 1945, less than a month before the end of World War Two.

The song held its place in popularity through the 50’s with Frank Sinatra, Johnny Cash, Pattie Labelle & The Bluebells and Elvis Presley, among many others, releasing cover versions which similarly became hits.

The song earned its place as the Liverpool FC’s anthem and signature tune after it topped the Top Ten charts four weeks in a row in 1963; at a time when the Top Ten in the charts would be played over the PA system (a luxury only Liverpool had at the time), on the Liverpool football grounds as a form of early pre-match entertainment!

There is no doubt that the message of hope in the song has given not only Liverpool fans, but others, hope through some very tough times – both on and off the field — sometimes in a serendipitous way.

Please find below, the lyrics of this wonderful, uplifting song:

When you walk through a storm, hold your head up high And don’t be afraid of the dark At the end of the storm, there’s a golden sky And the sweet, silver song of a lark

Walk on through the wind
Walk on through the rain
Though your dreams be tossed and blown

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Walk on, walk on
With hope in your heart
And you’ll never walk alone
You’ll never walk alone

Reflecting on this song, I realized that the only one who promises, and has the capacity and willingness, to walk with us through the dark, the storm, the wind, the rain, and when dreams are tossed and blown, is God.

In Genesis 28:15, God told Abraham,

“I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

Moses also, in handing over to Joshua not long before died, among other things told him before the whole Israel:

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you … It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you; He will not leave you or forsake you. Do not fear or be dismayed. (Deuteronomy 31:6, 8)

Then in Joshua 1:5 God told Joshua again,

“No one will be able to stand against you all the days of your life. As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave you nor forsake you.”

This was repeated in Joshua 1:9. David also said a similar thing to his young son Solomon when he gave him the mandate to build the House of God (1 Chronicles 28:20). Many other similar statements appear regularly, either passively or actively, throughout the Bible and include: 1 Kings 8:57, Isaiah 41:10-13, Psalm 94:14, and Hebrews 13:5.

God is in essence telling us, and reminding us:

“You will never walk alone.”

Christmas day was terrible for me because I woke up to a text message that one huge fan of Testimony Devotional, retired Chief State Attorney ELLEN C. KWAWUKUME, who we all called “Mama,” had been rushed to the hospital. By the evening of that same day, she was gone to be with the Lord.

Mama read the devotionals regularly, and gave me feedback on them often. And whenever the devotional delayed, Mama would send me a message saying:

“We did not have breakfast today.”

To the children — Senanu and Demi — and the many others she was “Mama” to, I say,

“Mama is no more here; a strong pillar has fallen. Mama trusted God and walked closely with Him. She never walked alone. You will never walk alone.”

Finally, to anyone who is full of fear, whose courage is failing, whose hope is on the verge of being lost, whose heart is breaking, I want to tell you today that,

 “YOU’LL NEVER WALK ALONE.”

MEMORY VERSE

It is the LORD who goes before you. He will be with you.
(Deuteronomy 31:8)
