The word “catharsis” is defined by Oxford Languages as

“The process of releasing, and thereby providing relief from, strong or repressed emotions.”

The interesting thing about “catharsis” is that it is achieved purely through conversation; through the use of words. It makes a big difference by relieving emotional illness, which sometimes lead to and manifests itself in physical and psychological illnesses. Words are powerful.

On his one-twentieth birthday, when Moses knew his time was getting near,  he called Israel together and spoke these words,

“I am one hundred and twenty years old today. I can no longer go out and come in. Also the Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross over this Jordan.’ The Lord your God Himself crosses over before you; He will destroy these nations from before you, and you shall dispossess them. Joshua himself crosses over before you, just as the Lord has said.  And the Lord will do to them as He did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites and their land, when He destroyed them. The Lord will give them over to you, that you may do to them according to every commandment which I have commanded you.  Be strong and of good courage, do not fear nor be afraid of them; for the Lord your God, He is the One who goes with you. He will not leave you nor forsake you.”

Then Moses called Joshua and said to him in the sight of all Israel,

“Be strong and of good courage, for you must go with this people to the land which the Lord has sworn to their fathers to give them, and you shall cause them to inherit it.  And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”
(Deuteronomy 31:1-8 NKJV)

These “words” of Moses in this address were enough to dispel the fears of Israel, and clear uncertainties of what was ahead of them. It gave them new strength, and a better view of  the future. It took their focus from what had “gone wrong”( because our anxieties are caused more by our perception of events, than the events themselves most times), to all that was possible. Those words released and provided relief from their strong disappointment in Moses; for bringing them out of Egypt to “come and die” in the wilderness. Those words that said,

“And the Lord, He is the One who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you; do not fear nor be dismayed.”

These are the words I want to give you today. May they dispel all your fears and anxieties; and may they provide a fresh outlook on life, seen through God’s own eyes; an outlook of only possibilities, because God goes before us;  in the name of the Father, and His Son Jesus Christ whom He sent to come and die for us, and the Holy Spirit our comforter, helper and counsellor.

Amen
