The statement flashed briefly before my eyes before dissapearing. The video clip then ended. The statement was:

“Aside your certificate add more virture to your career.”

The clip was about three women vying for a managerial position in a company. In the final test, a mess was deliberately left at the entrance of the company office to see which of the three aspiring managers would take responsibility for it.

I noticed something about the word “virture”  in the ending statement. So I replayed the video and paused it at the statement to verify. I felt it should be “virtue” instead of “virture” but then, the question that came to my mind was:

“Do you know all English words?”

“No. I don’t.” was my answer.

So I went searching for the word “virture” with anticipation of learning a new word.

There is always the trap to assume someone is right or wrong based on what we know or are exposed to, albeit limited. It is a form of generalization which, in precise philosophical language, is called a fallacy of defective induction or fallacy of hasty generalization. It is described as a conclusion that has been made on the basis of a weak premise, or one which is not justified by sufficient or unbiased evidence.[3]

Some who claim they dont believe in God’s existence fall in that trap all the time: They admit they do not know everything about the universe we live in, but are very conclusive about the non-existence of God. The other group is religious people who believe in the existence of God (based on their observations and experiences); but present God as someone they know absolutely.

I am a believer in Jesus Christ, and I also believe the Bible is God’s word. The Bible says:

“My thoughts are nothing like your thoughts,” says the Lord. “And my ways are far beyond anything you could imagine. For just as the heavens are higher than the earth, so my ways are higher than your ways and my thoughts higher than your thoughts.” [Isaiah 55:8-9]

The Bible also says in Ecclesiastes 3:11b

“He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.”

When asked in Acts 1:6 if He was going to restore the kingdom to Israel, Jesus replied:

“It is not for you to know the times or dates the Father has set by his own authority.” [Acts 1:7]

We can never dismiss the existence of God absolutely; neither can we say we know Him absolutely. Therein between these two extremes is where we lie. That is:

“We believe He exists, and we are continually striving to know Him.”

God in His infinite and soveriegn wisdom chooses to reveal what He wills of Himself to man. Jesus once said:

“I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise and prudent and have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.”

The sovereignty of God and the finitude of man is what makes man “man,” and God “God.”

To conclude, I did not find any meaning for the word “virture”. Maybe it does not yet exist, or maybe it was just a misspelling; but it gave me something to ponder about the sovereignty of God.

PRAYER

Father, please help me to acknowledge my emptiness always so that You can fill me, in Jesus’ name.

 MEMORY VERSE

He has planted eternity in the human heart, but even so, people cannot see the whole scope of God’s work from beginning to end.” [Ecclesiastes 3:11b]
